Deep vein thrombosis



How to prevent deep vein thrombosis :
👉 To prevent DVT, follow these instructions:

  • Identifying high risk person
  • Do not sit for long periods of time
  • Elevate legs if you are sitting for moderate periods of time
  • If you are on an airplane for more than four hours-get up and walk in the aisles, pump your feet up and down.
  • Keep hydrated-drink six glasses of water a day
  • Do not wear constricting garments around the legs or waist (elastic bands or garters).
  • Applying preventive measures such as,

    1. Application of elastic pressure stockings.
    2. Using of intermittent pneumonatic compression devices.
    3. Special body positioning
    4. Encourage regular exercises.
    5. Subcutaneous heparin for surgical patient DVT.

Nursing Management:

  • Providing comfort ;
    1. Provide bed rest for 5 to 7 days after diagnosis to provide chance for the thrombus to adhere to the vein wall and prevent thrombus immobilization.
    2. Elevation of the affected extremities above the level of the heart to promote venous drainage
    3. Applying worm moist packs to the affected extremity to reduce discomfort
    4. Applying elastic pressure stocking at the day and remove it at night.
    5.  Assess the skin and calve muscle for pain, irritation and tenderness
    6. Don't apply elastic pressure stockings in case of severe pitting edema because they can produce severe pitting at the knee
    7. Administer analgesics according to physician order to relieve pain
  • Provide health teaching related to risk factors and disease process.
  • Provide health teaching related to prevented measures.
